I think we’d all be hard pressed to find anyone who likes cleaning the bathroom, (especially the toilet) but what makes the whole ordeal even worse is having to use harsh chemicals to clean it.
The smell alone is off putting enough, but many people experience dizziness, respiratory problems and skin allergies from the products they use to simply giving their toilet a quick scrub.
The best solution? To switch to green cleaning.
It’s better for the environment, better for your health and also better for your wallet.
10 green cleaning tips
Here are a few tips on how to green clean your bathroom:
1. Cleaning the toilet – vinegar & baking soda
Mix half a cup of vinegar with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Pour it down the insides of the toilet and let it soak in the bowl for about 20 minutes. Give the toilet a good scrub and repeat every week. Easy.
2. Air fresheners
Bathrooms often don’t smell amazing but commercial air fresheners can be extremely over powering with potent chemicals. here’s some non-toxic tips:
- Try using an oil burner
- Put some dried flowers in the bathroom
- House plants and ferns are great for cleaning the air and keeping things fresh in your home.
- Try putting a few drops of essential oil into a small, dark spray bottle with water to make your own green, scented room spray.
3. Removing soap scum
Simply mix a store bought all-natural dishwashing soap with some baking soda until you have a paste. Apply this paste to the scummy area and scrub with a hard bristled brush. The soap scum will come right off.
4. All-purpose spray
For sinks, toilet seats, taps and bench tops, just mix the juice of one lime, the juice of one lemon, one cup of vinegar and one cup of water in a spray bottle. If you’ve got stubborn grime, just leave the lemon-lime spray to soak on the affected area for 5 – 10 minutes and then give it a good scrub.

You’ll need to make sure you always have plenty of baking soda if you want to green clean your house! To clean your floors simply dissolve a cup of baking soda into a bucket of warm water and add a squeeze of lemon to give it a lovely smell. Then mop your floors as usual.

Vinegar is a natural mould killer so dilute vinegar with a little bit of water in a spray bottle and spray it all over your shower and bathtub. Leave it to dissolve the mould and grime for about 10 minutes and then wipe over with a damp cloth.

If you’re really serious about being environmentally conscious in your home, then you simply must invest in a hand held steam cleaner. Using a steam cleaner is a chemical free way to remove built up grime without using harsh erosive products.
8. Cleaning shower curtains
Simply toss them in the washing machine with a cup of vinegar and some environmentally friendly washing liquid or powder.
9. Hot vinegar
If you’ve got stubborn areas that have been affected by mould and scum, dip a sponge in hot vinegar and use it to soak the area. The hot vinegar will break down the mould so you will be able to wipe it clean.

At some stage of our lives, most of us have all rented a property. Whether it’s been your own rental, or living with friends the mad rush of cleaning and tearing your hair out to get the place ‘perfect’ is all too familiar. For those bending the rules (and yes, there’s a few) you’ll find yourself hiding dog toys in the car and dropping your furry friend to the neighbours. And between trying to look like the gold-star tenant and playing detective removing all traces of additional house mates, the whole process can be extremely stressful.
Most of this stress, however, can be easily avoided. We put ourselves through this crazy ordeal to get the tick of approval, in fear that if there’s one thing out of place we’ll be booted to the streets. With a little understanding on how rental inspections really work and what’s to be expected of you as a tenant, you can save yourself a lot of the headache. Here’s a few tips to ensure you’ll pass with flying colours.
1. Start Early
The biggest mistake people make when it comes to rental inspections is leaving it all until the night before. Not only does this contribute to the stress of getting everything looking fabulous, but it leaves you feeling pretty damn exhausted the next day. Most times in simply comes down to organisation, but others find it easier to keep the house clean by leaving it all to the last minute.
In most cases you’ll receive at least two weeks’ notice for your inspection. This gives you plenty of time to attend to everything you need. Start doing little things as early as possible so you’re not bombarded with a list of chores to do all at once.
2. Clear the Clutter
There’s cleaning and there’s clutter. A house can be clean, but still look messy because everything is out on display. Whilst you’ll definitely need to clean your home properly for a rental inspection – and I mean scrubbing every corner brilliantly – you can change the appearance of your house for the better by clearing out the clutter.
Use it as an excuse to kill two birds with one stone. You may be able to get rid of things you no longer need or use and in return, have a tidy home. Take advantage of storage solutions and remove as many unnecessary items on surfaces as possible, even if it’s just temporarily for the inspection. This way, your home will look much neater when the property manager first walks in.
3. Follow the Rental Checklist
With each rental letter outlining the inspection date, there’ll be a cleaning checklist. Take advantage of it and use it as a guide to what they will be looking for. It’s very easy to dismiss the checklist with the mindset of how hard can it be to work out what you need to clean for yourself, but you’ll be surprised at what you can miss.
The rental checklist will usually list cleaning items you don’t normally include in your own regular cleaning routine, like dusting the light fittings and scrubbing the exhaust fans. It’s important you don’t just ignore these. Pay attention to their list and create one of your own too. Whilst this checklist is for vacating a rental property, it provides some good cleaning items to consider.
4. List Items you need to Discuss or Review
Rental inspections aren’t just all bad news. Actually, they can be a blessing in disguise! Not only does it give you the opportunity to really spring clean your home, but it’s also the perfect time to speak up. Most rental checklists will also include a section to write down any maintenance requests, so make sure you list any. It’s vital you know the difference though, between what’s expected by you to fix and what is expected by the owner.
As a rule of thumb, structural issues or the building’s grounds are usually the responsible of the owner. Any damages or breakages caused by you and your flat mates will be your responsibility. For any minor repairs in the home you can fix like a blown light bulb or carpet stains, it’s best you arrange to have them replaced, fixed prior to the inspection, or cleaned by professionals. However, if there’s plumbing or electrical issues now is the best time to address these with your landlord.
5. Get the Garden Looking Lush
If your home has a garden, it’s absolutely essential you look after it. Landscaping and gardens are a huge investment for landlords in time and money so maintenance tends to be strict. If you’re lucky, it may be included in your rental agreement that the landlord will have the lawns mowed and maintained. Whilst this will cut down some of your gardening time, it’ll still be your responsibility to weed the garden, prune bushes and keep it looking lush.
For those that do need to tackle a garden, it’s even more ideal you take note of point 1 – start early! Getting the garden up to scratch can be a good weekend job but it’s much easier to keep it under control if you do a little bit each week or two.
6. First Impressions Make a Difference
For almost everything, first impressions count; and it’s the same with your rental inspection too. How your home looks when the property manager first walks in can determine whether they only have a ‘quick look’, or they go to the extreme of checking every, single, detail.
If it’s your first rental inspection for the home you’re in now, you really want to go above and beyond. It’s this inspection which flags to the agent if they made the right decision or wrong one so put in a little more effort. If your front garden is well-maintained, the driveway free of weeds and the entry of your home looking almost-new, your property manager is already going to have a good impression when they walk in.
7. Secure Your Pets
Rental inspections aren’t just stressful for you, but your pets too so make sure you keep them in mind. Most inspection letters will advise to have any pets secured so take note of this if it applies to you. If your pets are part of the lease agreement, there’s no need for you to arrange to have them taken somewhere unless they are liable to stress out. Make sure however, the home is free of fur, toys and mess cleaned up and any damage made by them is fixed.
For those tenants that don’t have their pet on the lease, it can be worthwhile asking your landlord exactly what this includes. Perhaps they have advised no pets, but they could simply mean a puppy or a kitten. An older cat may be approved or a small secured pet, providing you pay a pet bond and can give your landlord an up-to-date injection and flea and worm check. It’s not uncommon for landlords to consider changes case-by-case so if you feel that may apply to you, be honest as soon as possible. The same goes with additional house mates too – if someone has moved in to that spare room, talk to your real estate instead of trying to hide them. This will save you so much stress!
All in all, rental inspections don’t need to be an excuse too freak out. Scrub your home, clean the clutter and look after the place. Most inspections only last around 10 minutes, and all they really want to know is that the home is being loved.

I hate cleaning and my cleaner has gone on an extended overseas trip. In her absence I have tried others. They are either too slow, too slap dash or too expensive and so the cleaning issue lands in the too-hard basket.
You can limp along for a while with the occasional flick of the broom and some strategic toilet brushing, but there is a limit.There comes a point when the build up of dust in the corners of the rooms could and probably does house a colony of small creatures. The fingerprints on the glass have started to develop their own artistic patina and the plughole in the sink looks like it has taken up smoking! But as time has gone on another, more insidious problem has emerged. I can’t possibly invite in a new cleaner; without first spending a day cleaning myself. It takes true strength of conviction to fight off the unreasonable and pointed question: “ But isn’t that what a cleaner does?” My heart sinks, clearly there is not going to be any support from that side of the table. This one’s all mine, I have to either swallow my pride or roll up my sleeves. I am slowly coming around to this way of thinking when the unimaginable happens; guests, AT SHORT NOTICE.
No sooner have I taken the call when I am rapidly and involuntarily overtaken by the state a woman possessed. I move like never before, at the frantic pace of the most powerful music I can find. “The flight of the bumblebee“ spurs me on.
“This cleaning thing is growing on me” I hear myself thinking.” It’s quite cathartic “as I develop an insane attention to detail, in an OCD sort of way. I get to thrash out everything that is wrong with the world, sanitizing, polishing, mopping, and vacuuming, even scrubbing grout with a toothbrush is strangely satisfying.
The guests come and go, my chest bursts with pride as I scan my sparkling rooms; even the most obscure crevices are proudly gleaming. I flop down on the sofa to bask in the glow of domestic bliss and wonder WHY I put myself through this.
Well it would appear that I am not entirely on my own. In 2012 an English toilet freshener Company, Bloo Flowers, commissioned a study of 2,000 women and revealed 70 per cent consider themselves to be house proud, with an incredible 86 per cent admitting they spend even more time tidying if they have guests due to arrive. More than three quarters even give their home a quick going over with the vacuum before their guest arrives, while another 73 per cent quickly wipe down their bathroom and toilets.
But because of this, 72 per cent feel put out if people arrive unannounced. And while it’s mother-in-laws who women named as the person they would least like to visit their home before they had chance to clean, their own parents and siblings weren’t far behind.
And to top it off, and this is where I side with the minority; they also found that far from being a chore, 52 per cent of women actually enjoy cleaning their home.

Many of us learned how to do our chores at a very early age by observing how grown-ups did it. Even now I realize I often do things without questioning myself – why do I add more detergent when I try to clean a resistant stain? Things like this made me think of other habits and whether they are as efficient as I believed.
Use newspapers when cleaning your windows
Many green cleaning enthusiasts believe that you can clean your windows using newspapers instead of paper towels. This sounds eco-friendly, economic and convenient, however it is not always as efficient. Newspapers can leave ink trace on your windows and frames. Maybe you can find another way to employ newspapers.

This rule applies to a lot of things, but is not really useful when it comes to applying cleaning detergent. When you cannot clean a stain on your carpet, intuitively you try again by adding more detergent. If the detergent is good and capable of removing the stain even small doze will work just fine. If not, then, instead of adding more, maybe change the method, or maybe you are using the wrong detergent on the first place. Sometimes in our best efforts we make things worse and more detergent doesn’t really help.

One of the biggest mistakes housewives and home-owners make is to fake clean a home, instead of actually cleaning it. What I mean is that sometimes we care more about making things look clean, instead of really making sure everything is clean and germ-free. So that would be the last, but biggest cleaning fail of all. If there is something you cannot really clean – better call professionals.
